  7. An extremely simple frontend to an extremely simple program.
  8.  
  9. This frontend requires Acorn's Toolbox to be installed on your system.
  10.  
  11. Drag the new format BBC game archive files downloaded from 'The BBC Lives!'
  12. to the iconbar icon and the archives will be setup ready for running in
  13. Warm Silence Software's !6502Em. The /inf files will be read and the files
  14. will have their load/execute/length attributes set, and be renamed/moved
  15. into directories as appropriate.

  17. Once the files have been renamed their source files (if different) will be
  18. removed as will the /inf files.
  19.  
  20. To run a game ensure 'file_xxx' is selected (icon bar menu -> options ->
  21. file_xxx) and then double-click the starting file (sometimes !Boot, or
  22. experiment until you find it).
  23.  
  24. You'll need SparkFS for this application to work with the files 'in situ'
  25. in their downloaded archive, otherwise you'll need to decompress them first
  26. (using !SparkPlug or something similar). If you've decompressed the archive
  27. then copy all the files into a directory of their own, and drag that
  28. directory to !BBCconv instead of the archive file itself. The resulting files
  29. should have some of the filenames (usually half) with a slash ("/") in them.
  30. If this isn't the case then the conversion won't work. Note that early
  31. versions of !SparkPlug use underscores ("_") instead of slashes, so !BBCconv
  32. fails. The solution to this is to ensure you have version 2.25 or later.
  33. Version 2.23 will not suffice. !SparkPlug is available from various FTP
  34. sites.

  36. I don't know of any bugs, although obviously the program can't cope with
  37. files which RISC OS itself can't cope with - the 'Monsters' archive from
  38. the Acornsoft directory at 'The BBC Lives!' is the only example I know
  39. of (the filenames contain "$"). You can fix dodgy filenames by loading
  40. the archives into a text editor, but you need to make sure the sum of
  41. the ASCII values of the characters in the filenames remains constant.
  42. (So, for example, swapping two characters is fine, or changing a 'b' to
  43. a 'c' and a 'f' to an 'e' is also okay). You may need to quite the image
  44. filing system before the text editor will accept the archive (since
  45. otherwise it thinks it is a directory).
